Mercedes-AMG considering Ferrari-fighting supercar

Mercedes-AMG is reportedly considering producing a mid-engine supercar to compete with Ferrari and other exotic car companies. Speaking with AMG chief Tobias Moers, Autocar reports the German automaker's performance division is plotting a new supercar.

"My personal thinking is that we are now at a level where we could support another dedicated AMG model," said Moers, noting that "the car would be totally different to the GT."

"We need to break the rules and do something nobody expects," he said. "It has to be a bigger step – a much bigger step."

Sources anticipate it could be a mid-engined supercar positioned against the likes of the Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 650S, and Lamborghini Huracan. AMG's version could pack a high-density, compact turbo V6 hybrid powertrain like the one it uses on the racing circuit.

That would make the prospective supercar closer to the BMW i8 than it would to the likes of the McLaren P1 or LaFerrari, and possibly occupy a price point left vacant by the departure of the previous SLS AMG. It may be a while before anything the project is ready, but with former AMG boss Ola Kallenius soon to take over as head of R&D for Mercedes, the chances of this high-tech supercar being approved for production look better than ever.
