Here's the Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster and its fabric top
AMG boss Tobias Moers hinted at the possibility of more Mercedes-AMG GT models in the near future and a recently leaked product roadmap revealed that Mercedes is indeed working on a roadster variant of the AMG GT. The upcoming model, called the GT C Roadster, is expected to come out in 2017 and was recently spotted wearing a fabric top.
The thinly disguised prototype looks extremely similar to its hardtop counterpart, except for a few subtle changes. While the front closely resembles the current AMG GT, the prototype's roof has a more rakish angle, which terminates in a longer rear deck with a trunk and not the coupe's hatch. The result is a vehicle that looks longer and more angular than the hardtop. The top and roofline look very similar to those of the SLS AMG Roadster, which makes sense because the GT's platform is an evolution of the SLS's.
We've been told that this model was designed from the start to include a convertible version, so rigidity shouldn't be an issue, although it will require some added bracing. Performance is expected to come from the current AMG GT's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that generates 456 hp. With the added weight from the canvas top and its mechanism, the roadster's zero-to-60-mph time should be a touch over the current AMG GT coupe's time of 3.9 seconds.
The roadster is expected to have an asking price that's slightly higher than that pf the GT S, which starts at $131,200. The new body style could be revealed as early as the end of this year and could coincide with the debut of an updated coupe model. We expect it to be initially offered in base trim (which will be renamed GT C for both coupe and convertible) as well as in 503-hp GT S form. A GT R variant of the roadster is likely sometime later.
