GM remains top of the list in matters of automotive innovation by Patent Board

General Motors remains the first line of innovation for the fourth consecutive quarter among 183 companies classified by The Patent Board in its quarterly report on the transportation and automotive industry. 

Some 1,123 American patents were granted to GM in 2011 in the areas of global product engineering, technical services global powertrain research and development on a global scale and OnStar service. 

The Patent Board is the leading independent provider of research tools to best practices and data on patent analysis and intellectual property investment. It monitors and analysis of innovations and patents in 17 industries on a global scale.

Among the recent technological patents obtained by GM include:

Quiet Brakes: A brake disc friction damping that uses a thin metal ring encrusted in the brake disc to absorb vibrations and stifle grinding. The quieter brake should be available on some cars and trucks within two to three years.

OnStar voice recognition: The method used by speech recognition OnStar can recognize the position of the speaker in the vehicle and adjust the magnitude or radius capture microphone to react to commands according to their provenance.

Managing the temperature of the system eAssist: vehicles with the engine shutdown function, such as Buick LaCrosse with eAssist, a call management system ensures that the temperature occupant comfort during engine shutdown and prevents the latter in case of loss of comfort, for example, very hot or very cold weather.

"We have to redefine the very nature of the automobile and encourage these efforts our staff reinvent every subsystem of the vehicle" to say Alan Taub, vice president of research and development of GM global scale. "Our recognition as a leader in innovation is important because it shows our customers and our shareholders that we are at the forefront of technology. "
