Nissan Leaf, Sentra recalled for passenger airbags
The Basics: Nissan North America is recalling a total of 4,520 Nissan Leaf and Sentra vehicles for the 2016 model year for an issue with the cars' passenger airbag. The affected Leafs (182 vehicles) were built from February 24, 2016 to March 23, 2016. Affected Sentras (4,338 vehicles) were manufactured from February 9, 2016 to March 4, 2016. A stop-sale order is in effect until the automaker can repair the vehicles.
The Problem: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the wiring harness connector may detach from the passenger airbag. If the connector were to unfasten itself, the dual-stage passenger airbag may not deploy in the case of an accident.
Injuries/Deaths: None reported.
The Fix: Dealers will inspect the wiring harness connector to ensure proper connection. If necessary, dealers will replace the main body harness, as well as the passenger airbag module.
If you own one: The recall is expected to begin later this month with Nissan dealers reaching out to owners shortly.
