In first 10 days, 600 people say yes to buying Toyota Mirai

Toyota has said it expects to sell about 3,000 of its Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in the US between its domestic launch this October and the end of 2017. The order books opened up July 20 and, within the first 10 days, a fifth of that number had already spoken. And they said yes.

Between July 20 to July 30, about 600 people expressed interest in either buying or leasing the Mirai, Wards Auto reports, citing Toyota spokeswoman Jana Hartline. As promised, Toyota is vetting prospective buyers to make sure they live near a hydrogen fueling station today or the ones that are being built.

And that's a major issue. Drivers of the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell SUV in Southern California's Orange County recently went public with complaints that many of the nearby hydrogen refueling stations were either very slow or out of order altogether.

Toyota allowed that many of the current stations had been set up for demonstration and weren't designed for extensive retail use. As a result, the company is working with the state of California to build out as many as 15 new stations by the end of the year and another 20 or so next year.

The Mirai will be priced at $57,500, though most units are likely to be leased. Those three-year rates are $499 a month, with $3,649 due at signing. Both options give drivers three years of free hydrogen refueling. The car will start sales at eight California Toyota dealerships and has a full-tank range of about 300 miles.
