Tesla Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation sign agreement to develop an electric version of the RAV4
TESLA MOTORS, INC.. (Tesla) and TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) has announced that the two companies had signed an agreement to initiate the development of an electric version of the RAV4, as was announced Elon Musk and Akio Toyoda last May. The intention being to market the electric vehicle in the United States in 2012, prototypes will be built by combining the Toyota RAV4 model Tesla electric powertrain. Tesla plans to produce and deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota for assessment for the current year. The first prototype has already been built and is currently being tested.
In May, Tesla and TMC had announced their intention to cooperate in the development of parts of a system of production and technical support for electric vehicles. Tesla desire to learn and enjoy the experience of Toyota's engineering, manufacturing and production, while Toyota tries to learn the technology of electric vehicles from Tesla, the same as its rapid decision-making process and its flexibility .
Since its founding in 1937, TMC follows the philosophy of a "contribute to society by making cars", and created cars that satisfy its many customers in worldwide. TMC launches the Prius hybrid vehicle first generation in 1997. The company also intends to launch on the market of electric vehicles by 2012.
