Creation Saturday Unifor union: it will include the CEP and CAW
Two major unions have united Saturday, the Canadian Union of Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP) and the Union of Canadian Auto Workers (CAW). They will be called henceforth Unifor.
The founding congress of the new union unifies, which will bring together some 300 000 members across Canada, took place on Saturday in Toronto.
With 55,000 members in Quebec, the Unifor become the largest union in the private sector. It will be the second largest union affiliated organization within the Federation of Workers of Quebec (FTQ).
Have a uniform national base office in Montreal. It will include several specialized services including research, legal, education, health and safety and communications.
One of the challenges intends to give Unifor is the recruitment and opening its doors to classes of citizens who have not always had access to a union.
For over a year, CEP and CAW had begun the process of merging to better cope with the challenges of the coming years. Several compounds committees of members of both unions working to develop the structures, statutes, the name and logo, and the policies of the new union.
Jerry Dias was elected president of Unifor, the new union.
