BMW USA commemorates 25 years of the V12 engine
It was in 1987 that for the first time, a BMW series, was powered by a 12 cylinder engine.
It was a BMW 750i powered by a 5.0-liter V12 delivering 300 horsepower, for a couple of 332 lb-ft.
The engineers of the German manufacturer were beginning their research on such an engine in 1972, bringing together two six-cylinder engines. An approach which, at the time, was not conclusive, because the new V12 engine was much too heavy.
But it will take until 1982 to review the BMW engineers tackle new to this type of engine. This time, they went back to zero and five years later, was born the first V12 engine manufacturing series of Munich.
Over the years, the V12 is much refined and has gain strength.
1987 V12 5.0 liter engine 300 hp (750i);
1994 V12 5.4 liter 326 horsepower;
2002 V12 6.0 liter 445 hp (760i);
2012 V12 6.0 liter 544 horsepower (760Li).

The American division of BMW emphasizes, has its way, the 25th anniversary of the V12 engine of the company, offering all of its special edition 760Li sedan with "V12 25 Years Edition".
